Activities
Don’t be fooled by Bargara’s peace and tranquillity – there is lots to see and do.
Most notable are the nesting sea turtles at neighbouring Mon Repos. From November to March, watch the century-old turtles return to lay their eggs, or marvel at the hatchlings as they make their first journey to the ocean. Nightly Tours can be booked online. Staying in Bargara, you might even be lucky enough to spot a nesting turtle or hatching turtles on one of the many beaches. National Park rangers and volunteers patrol all beaches through the turtle season.
From June to October jump aboard the Lady Musgrave Experience for a whale-watching expedition from neighbouring Burnett Heads and see the majestic humpbacks that cruise past Bargara each year. The unique coastline offers spectacular shore diving and snorkelling or the perfect launchpad to visit the majestic coral clay islands of Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot.
Take advantage of being at the southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, with a day cruise to Lady Musgrave Island or, if you are feeling adventurous, opt for a camping trip to the island (permits required). Spectacular from the air and on the ground, Lady Elliot Island is known around the world as the home of the Manta Ray. Stay for a day or a week in the Eco Resort.
There are plenty of activities to keep you occupied in Bargara, like a guided bike or segue tour. Why not walk or cycle the Turtle Trail that links Kellys Beach, by the Bargara foreshore, to Mon Repos, Oaks Beach and the Burnett Heads Harbour. There is also plenty of fun to be had at our award-winning Turtle Tracks or Christensen Park playgrounds for the kids.
For fitness lovers, visit the Bargara YMCA to keep up your gym sessions or head outdoors to Schuhkraft Park at Neilson’s Park Beach for their outdoor fitness hub. For all ages, it features static fitness equipment, an informal sports area, oceanside walk paths, a climbing frame and a nature-based play area. The basketball rink is popular with young and old. For something with a more relaxed pace, join the magical Saturday morning beachfront Sai Shanti Yoga classes or a Happiness Yoga studio session.
Bargara beaches are ideal for swimming with Lifesavers on patrol at Neilson’s Park Beach and Kellys Beach seasonally. For the surfers – you will know when the ‘surf is up’ as the local grapevine comes alive or visit https://www.facebook.com/pacifique.surfriders/.
Another popular pastime is fishing, with some amazing catches to be had at our shore fishing areas as well as creek and river estuary fishing. Boat ramps are found at Bargara, Burnett Heads and Elliott Heads. Why not join a deep-sea fishing charter with Truansea Fishing & Surfing Charters or Bargara Fishing Charters
Even a game of tennis is available at Neilson’s Beach. Bookings and hire fees payable are to be directed to the Bargara Beach Caravan Park
